“Old people and children,” I point out, “get a free pass on fancy fonts.” “And family,” Amy says. “Right,” I say. Amy and I are on the same page here. My husband is staring at me. He disagrees? “Why do you use so many ellipses?” he asks, as if finally getting the nerve to confront me on this matter. I do? “Yeah, you’ll write to tell me about the kids having soccer practice, and then you’ll end with a whole bunch of periods.” Say It With Screamers!!!!! - washingtonpost.com

  • we should all feel bad for Santorum's kids

village voice > people > Savage Love by Dan Savage

I remember listening to the radio when Santorum said something obnoxious about gay couples: An anti-gay-marriage amendment was a homeland security measure, Santorum said, which makes gay couples terrorists. My son, who happens to be the same age as Santorum’s younger daughter (the one weeping and clutching a doll in that widely circulated photo), was in the room at the time, and he got pretty upset. So, yeah, we should all feel bad for Santorum’s kids – what kind of parent drags a sobbing child in front of the national media? – but let’s also feel bad for all the other kids that Santorum hurt. ha ha

  • take iT(unes) to the limit

This Macintouch Reader Report on Music Servers offers some deep and dirty real-world hacks involving network storage, multiple iPods, and other edge cases. As home networks get more sophisticated, the shortcomings of iTunes' single-user model become clear. The time I spend on dumb repetetive tasks, such as copying music to my wife’s computer, will soon be double as my children discover iTunes (it’s already my son’s number one “place to go on the computer” – he has a favorite podcast, you see). I hope the famous it-just-works ease and elegance we expect from Apple are brought to bear on this issue. In the meantime, here’s what the pioneers of family music management are cobbling together with their bare hands.

  • Po knows Oprah

The media is increasingly ignoring the true American family, and instead is putting the dramas of affluent families on Page One. It would be okay if they delivered these portraits with a sardonic wink, so that we might laugh at the foibles of the well-off. But there is no wink. Instead, we are asked to sympathize with people’s self-made problems, and these affluent-family issues are held up as representative of us all. Po Bronson’s column shows how media transmits the fears of rich and powerful parents to a mass audience who are then affected by their (natural, but inappropriate) emotional response with negative material consequences. I think media’s amplification of irrational fear can be seen absolutely everywhere. Even this blog!

Van Halen on Everest – If I had been there, your iPod would not have worked because I would have ripped it off your skull and thrown it over the north face and said Wake up! You are alive! My favorite comment in response to an absurd essay in the Washington Post panning the iPod for failing under extremes of temperature and altitude. Presumably published in service of the chocolate-and-vanilla-swirl school of “objectivity” so popular among poor journalists today.

I do not know what “crozzled” means. Nor do I know what “kerfs” mean, or “grambeled” or “sleavings” or innumerable other words introduced into the narrative. I have a vague idea of what the word “claggy” means in the sentence sequence, “The gray and rotting teeth. Claggy with human flesh,” but I don’t want to think too much about it. The end is nigh and woe is us (on The Road by Cormac McCarthy).

  • culture, counterculture

2 panel R Crumb illustration of a mainstream youth face and a tattooed pierced face with unconventional hairstyle

The famously rebellious Jimi Hendrix played a legendary, electric-guitar rendition of America’s national anthem at Woodstock in 1969. Was this feedback-heavy anthem a symbolic rejection of mainstream American culture, or a celebration of the country and its values? Hendrix’s use of this prominent American symbol forces us to question just how far the hippies went in rejecting the dominant culture. Indeed, countercultures and the American mainstream make strange, but frequent bedfellows. Witness the adoption of one-time countercultures by corporate America: Could early punk rockers have guessed that music by The Clash and Iggy Pop would one day sell luxury cars and vacation cruises? How did the hippies go from rebels against 1950s materialism to fashion trendsetters? And what transformed a small, underground music scene in the Pacific Northwest into the lucrative grunge and “alternative rock” juggernaut of the 1990s? Jamie Jesson is teaching RHE 309K - Youth Rebellion and the Rhetoric of American Identity at the University of Texas at Austin.

I felt that mapping Sal’s journey would provide new levels of understanding, for me and others, on Kerouac, his motivations, the motivations of his characters and other things about β€œOn the Road.” For example, he talks about being stuck in Shelton, Nebraska. It’s one thing to read that particular passage, but another thing to put it in perspective with a mapβ€”to see just exactly how far away from everything Shelton, Nebraska really is and to realize how that would have affected Kerouac and Sal. World Hum interviews Michael Hess on his annotated Google Map of the first trip west in On the Road.

  • My tushy feel good

randomWalks' greatest hits: One Evening When She Was Two

One day I told my students (freshmen at a prominent east-coast university) to pull out a piece of paper. They all did. I told them to print their names in the upper right-hand corner. They all did. I told them to tile the paper “A Syllabus of Syllables,” and then underline the title. They all did. I told them to write the following syllables next to the numbers: “ge, sha, la, urb, orb, go, vin, sko, sti, cer.” They all did. I told them to form a word from each of the syllables. They asked me a few questions - they wanted to be sure exactly what it was I wanted from them - and then they all hunched over their papers and did it. I told them to fold the paper in half. Deborah asked which way. I said lengthwise. Then I told them to hand in their papers. They all did. I stood there with a handful of 15 papers folded lengthwise. Everybody was looking at me.

Not one of them asked me why we were doing this. Not one of them told me to go screw myself. Not one of them – not one – even looked at me strange.

Why should they? Nothing strange had happened. this was school. School is where you give up your power, you do what you’re told, and you don’t ask questions. In school, we all learn not to care anymore, not even to care that we’re being humiliated, because everybody keeps telling us that we’re being educated.

If we sat around and deliberately tried to come up with a way to further enlarge the achievement gap, we might just invent homework. Elementary-school students shouldn’t do homework. By Emily Bazelon - Slate Magazine It’s being referred to as “the homework debate,” but I haven’t seen anybody argue that homework is good pedagogy. Hey, check this out: The word comes from the ancient Greek paidagogos, the slave who supervised the education of slave children in whatever given trade they were forced into. Children who lived in under the supervision of Paidagogos were always slaves as no free person took orders from a slave. It was the Paidagogos job to act as a “Drill Sergeant”, and insure that the slaves performed their daily routines as expected by their Master. Wikipedia: Pedagogy

You do the best you can, you fight that technology in all kinds of ways, but I don’t know anybody who’s made a record that sounds decent in the past twenty years, really. You listen to these modern records, they’re atrocious, they have sound all over them. There’s no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like – static. Even these songs probably sounded ten times better in the studio when we recorded ‘em. CDs are small. There’s no stature to it. I remember when that Napster guy came up across, it was like, ‘Everybody’s gettin’ music for free.’ I was like, ‘Well, why not? It ain’t worth nothing anyway.’ “. . . The new Oliver Stone movie, “World Trade Center,” tells the story of two Port Authority police officers – Sgt. John McLoughlin and Officer Will Jimeno – who were found by two former U.S. Marines working as volunteers. But the moviemakers only knew the whereabouts of one of the Marines; the other had seemingly vanished.

Because the moviemakers (and most everyone else) didn’t know much about the “missing” Marine, the actor playing him is a white man. In real life, Sgt. Thomas is African-American.

Matt’s Idea Blog: How to read a lot of books in a short time

The most useful technique comes from Jason Womack, and synthesizes nicely the most common ideas. In a nutshell, he says he reads the book four times.

    1. Table of contents, glossary, index.
    2. Anything in bold, titles, and subtitles.
    3. First line of every paragraph.
    4. Entire book

Here’s the twist: Steps 1-3 should only take about 10 minutes.

  • Bruce Lee may seem to be just another uni-dimensional macho hero, but his rise marked an epochal shift for Asian Americans, both as actors and as men. After decades of being demonized as sly yet effeminate β€œyellow peril” in the post-World War II era, Lee represented a positive, vigorous version of masculinity. And it’s this consolation that actors like Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa cling to when they play similar roles in movies like Mortal Kombat, even when they’re negative. β€œIf the choice is between playing wimpy business men and the bad guy,” Tagawa tells Adachi, β€œI’d rather play the bad guy. … I want kids to know that Asian men have balls.”

  • Jensen on whiteness

One hears this constantly in the conversation about immigration, the lingering fear that somehow "they" (meaning not just Mexican-Americans and Latinos more generally, but any non-white immigrants) are going to keep moving to this country and at some point become the majority demographically.

Even though whites likely can maintain a disproportionate share of wealth, those numbers will eventually translate into political, economic, and cultural power. And then what? Many whites fear that the result won't be a system that is more just, but a system in which white people become the minority and could be treated as whites have long treated non-whites. This is perhaps the deepest fear that lives in the heart of whiteness. It is not really a fear of non-white people. It's a fear of the depravity that lives in our own hearts: Are non-white people capable of doing to us the barbaric things we have done to them?

AlterNet: Why White People Are Afraid.

I am such a dumb modern American, living in my suburb, driving my car to work and back, in a constructed environment that exists mainly to serve the exigencies of human lives as they have manifested in just the past 50 years or so. Much of it is shit. No, shit is too good a word for it. At least shit is real, stinky and animal. These buildings that lack character, these ugly roads, this language debased into commerce, I don't know what to call it that can communicate my distaste for it.

  • your black is beautiful

...It turned into a deep meditation on race. It pisses the black girls off because I start with the white girl verset—they're like 'Fuck you! How can you stand up for those bitches!' I'm like, 'I'm not—I'm just saying it as it is.' Then the second verse is about the black girls that don't fit in. Doing the kind of music I do, I always meet the one black girl in the room who's into, like, the Cure and Atmosphere; she'll be really cute, and all the thug guys at her school wish she listened to Tupac. The black girls that act white are still dark-skinned white girls, because they're white girls on the inside, and vice versa. That's America.

  • like a gentle old cop making a soft arrest

How can you pilot a spacecraft if you can't find your way around your own apartment? It's just like retaking a movie shot until you get it right. And you will begin to feel yourself in a film moving with ease and speed. But don't try for speed at first. Try for relaxed smoothness taking as much time as you need to perform an action. If you drop an object, break and object, spill anything, knock painfully against anything, galvanically clutch an object, pay particular attention to the retake. You may find out why and forestall a repeat performance.

  • a very small shell script

Most of us humans pretend our entire lives that we are something other than animals, and as a result we think our "animal nature" is something you can just ignore or somehow transcend — preferably while ignoring it. We enter the false dichotomy of "man or beast", when the truth is actually "man and beast." We are not one — we are two. And the one of us who thinks he's running things is really just a recent software upgrade that runs atop a highly sophisticated operating system that's already had millions of years of performance tuning — and can run just fine without you.

The Multiple Self (dirtSimple.org). I first read this a few months ago. I'm still not sure exactly what it means, but I'm sure it's important.

It is suggested in the Gospel, in no uncertain terms, that Judas is the only one of the disciples who truly understands Jesus. The heart of the Gospel of Judas communicates a revelation or a teaching that Jesus offered to Judas about the nature of the world and the nature of God in the world. It is this teaching about cosmology that is the content of the knowledge that Judas must understand in order to become enlightened. He does understand it; He becomes transfigured or enlightened and he does exactly what Jesus asks him to do. He turns him into the authorities.
