World Order - “World Order in New York”

I just love these guys. So coordinated, tight, and talented. And the music’s not bad either. I also love that they filmed in New York, one of if not the greatest city in the world.

I’m still mad at Will I. Am. and Justin Bieber for ripping these guys and Daft Punk off.

Steve McQueen talks lack of Diversity in Film

This warms the cockles of my heart for so many reasons:

1.) When asked about the lack of diversity, Steve gets right to the point by basically saying, “Why the fuck you asking the black guy, the minority in the room?  How about asking the 8 other white guys who don’t cast minorities as leads in their films?” Thank you for that, Mr. McQueen.

2.) The white panelists’ complete refusal to participate in the conversation is representative of their refusal to address/acknowledge the problem of a lack of minority representation in film.  One even has the audacity to say, “I”m not getting into it.”  As if the issue at hand is completely irrelevant to his job as a director.  As if to say, how dare they, despite being part of the problem, be asked to engage in a conversation about…the problem.  The lunacy of it all!

3.) Steve’s utter disregard for white feelings.

THE LAST BIT ABOUT ALTERNATE REALITY IN FILM/ I’VE BEEN SAYING THAT FOR A MINUTE, WHEN MCQUEEN CAME OUT WITH IT I NEARLY FLEW OF MY CHAIR

Hey, guys.  ESPECIALLY “guys”… Watch this. It is very, VERY important that you watch this entire video. THIS is how a Man can be a Feminist. This is how WE, as Men, support the Women and Children in our society.

About halfway through, it starts talking about our obligations to not be ‘silent bystanders’ to violence - and it starts with identifying and calling out emotional violence.

When I talk about embracing new Perspectives, pointing out that we are in a battle for the collective soul of our culture, and that every small gesture and change can make a tremendous, unanticipated difference… THIS video demonstrates Perfectly what is possible. So please take up the fight against Indifference.

    niaking:

If you live in the Bay, and are not choosing to be willfully ignorant, you probably already know that gentrification is a huge problem here. San Francisco’s proximity to Silicon Valley has attracted a lot of techie-type young professionals who are pushing out SF’s previous residents, especially those that are low income people of color. Those displaced are often moving to the East Bay, pushing the East Bay’s low-income residents of color out into far-flung suburbs with little of the resources the “inner-city” provides, such as public transit. Nothing I’ve said so far is anything that hasn’t already been said over and over again.

Resistance to gentrification takes many forms. Some, like Causa Justa and the Right to the City Alliance organize against evictions and foreclosures. Others, like local Barry Jenkins, make thoughtful films like Medicine for Melancholy, a love letter to the city of San Francisco lamenting the fact that many people of color can no longer afford to live there. And then you have Miss Persia and Daddie$ Pla$tik.

When I first saw Miss Persia and Daddie$ Pla$tik perform at Marga Gomez’s Comedy Bodega at Esta Noche in the Mission, I knew immediately I was witnessing something amazing. As someone who wrote my undergraduate thesis on the power of queer and trans people of color’s performance art, I recognized the performance of “Google Apps” as protest art, the likes of which I had never seen before. Even as I watched the performance, I didn’t feel like my mind was open enough to fully comprehend what I was witnessing. Which is why I’m really glad they made a video.

Though the slowly atrophying academic part of my brain is tempted to do a close reading, I will not interpret every line for you. That would be like reading a choose-your-own-adventure book where all your adventures are already chosen for you. I will say that I disagree with the interpretation of the video/song’s message as xenophobic. It’s pretty clear to me that Miss Persia and Daddie$ Pla$tik don’t want to be white, they just want to be able to stay in their homes.

What else can I say about this video? It’s hilarious, it’s obscene, and it’s poignant. Though thousands more words are sure to be spent explaining and opining on the housing crisis in the Bay Area, perhaps none will do so more successfully or succinctly than “Moving to the East Bay/Living life the broke way/SF keep your money/F*** your money!”

I can’t believe I’ve never heard this song before, I guess it isn’t on any SoM regular releases, but it is sooooooo good and that Bob James sample is gold, I can’t believe no one has ever sampled this before?

Also! This isn’t even a Domino joint, it’s produced by Adam/A-Plus which makes it even better.

EDIT: Apparently this was never released because Paramount (which owns the rights, from Taxi) won’t ever clear it, so duh. Hear the original Bob James “Angela” here.

If you love hip-hop, or even are interested in music history, find some time to watch this great documentary. This is the Life - How The West Was Won is about The Good Life which was the legendary cafe where so many LA rappers got their start in the 90’s. Most folks know about Freestyle Fellowship and Project Blowed and some of the folks who went on to mass commercial success, but you can see so much more of what was happening in this documentary.

Medusa and SIN. Fat Joe getting booed off the stage. Ganja K. Cut Chemist. 2Mex. Charli 2Na. Amazing, magical stuff happening in a tiny little grocery store in South Central.

(Aceyalone is in my top 5 best emcees of all time, and he isn’t in this very much, but there are some scenes of him freestyling in the parking lot that are pretty amazing.)

At dollarshort.org there is a good discussion of Digital Video cameras. We recently bought the Canon ZR60, and (I don’t know from videography so I won’t say anything by way of review about it yet except that) it’s a lot of fun. I will say that my requisites matched Mena’s, and I’ve been thoroughly satisfied. I’ve been a little disappointed by the lack of web resources for amateur, no-budget, dogme documentarians, though – I’ve been looking for sites with reviews of DV media, iMovie 3 tutorials, and tips/techniques for shooting, and found nothing worth mentioning. What am I missing?

Bill Bennett should not be pilloried because he maxed out his credit line in Atlantic City, Vegas, or even Reno. Bennett should be taken to task for undermining teacher's unions while Education Secretary. If it weren't for the work Bennett did as Drug Czar, the federal government might not have a pretext to build a police state around combating blunts and bongs. Over two million in jail, many for weed busts, and Bill Bennett served as the Thomas Jefferson of the Drug War. These are serious gambles that the American people lost.
