Re: Taping of Windows During Storm
As for tape, I have heard more people than not say it is not worth it. It may help with glass cleanup a little bit, but my personal experience in Florida says you could use your preparation time much better by boarding up (this takes a lot of time.... be organized before the storm); bagging your computers, electronics, and important papers/photographs/heirlooms and getting your post-storm cleanup and repair supplies in order.

I'd be willing to bet that you aren't going to need to put tapes on your windows for this storm.

We've lived through a couple of typhoons, never put up tape, and even with the wind blowing at 110, there wasn't much need for it.

Where were these typhoons? The vegetation around here isn't adapted for 50+ mph sustained wind speeds. Which says nothing of the small forest behind our house that the developer began toppling this week.

Why do people live in states where they regularly face destruction, again?

Your question supposes that there are states which aren't at risk of natural disaster — could this be true? According to the UN, "ninety per cent of disaster victims worldwide live in developing countries, where poverty and population pressures force growing numbers of poor people to live in harm's way -- on flood plains, in earthquake-prone zones and on unstable hillsides." Apart from poverty and population, there are lots of obvious reasons why humans live near oceans, rivers, tectonic fault lines, volcanoes, and so on.

i live in china, which regularly faces the worst natural disasters, ever.

mostly that's flooding.

my parents, on the other hand, live in a house surrounded by trees. trees which have a root system that is very shallow, in clay that is very easily crumbled by the wind force action that makes the trees they are keeping rooted bend and snap, whip and crack.

with all that rain, there's bound to be a fallen tree sometime or another.
