Sam Shepard was a waiter in a club (I think it was the Vanguard) where she used to perform. He wrote a beautiful piece about her in Motel Chronicles. You can read it yourself here: http://www.boscarol.com/nina/html/bio_stuff/motel.html
David Sedaris was in Portland at a lecture last night, and a member of the audience asked him about Nina Simone. He said he'd never met her, but knew of a friend who saw her in concert in New York. She wore platform sneakers and a Ghostbusters t-shirt, and refused to perform until the concert promoter handed her her check. So she made the whole audience wait, the promoter brought out the check, she sang one song and walked off the stage.
