whenever my friend and i are driving in her SUV and we are listening to Iz, she starts to cry.

it's because he is a hawaiian unity voice. and it reminds her of how, even though she is not white, she was called haole (or ghost) because people thought she was.

hawaii has horrible problems with racism.

there's even a university professor who ran for the seat of state senate there who said that all haoles (pronounced how lee) should be asked to leave. ironic, given she is herself half white.
