washingtonpost.com: Officials, Cyclists Push Pedaling for Commuters
We've focused the last 25 years on optimizing the automobile commute. As we run out of space for them, we realize we have to enhance the other alternatives. . . . The streets aren't getting any wider.Washington, D.C., area planners are paying marginally more attention to commuting by bike, but some are pessimistic it'll catch on.

Wouldn't it be easier to simply add another lane or two to every road then to ask people to ride nasty bicycles? Thanks.

In all seriousness, not everyone has the option to take on the extra commuting time. But DC's public transportation is both underused and inadequate.

And then you have people who just don't want to take public transit in the first place, although I think that's less of an issue in eastern cities than it is here in SoCal.

It takes me LESS time to bike to work than it does to use mass transit. (I live in the D.C. area.) But I live right next to a bike path that takes me almost all the way to work.

If I tried to take mass transit to work, I'd literally end up taking two buses, a trolley and a train.
Early to bed, early to rise, etc.

um, that's crazy.
i know a guy who travels longer to go to work than he does to go shopping.

Okay, maybe not a train.
Would this guy be Huckleberry Hound? Or perhaps Morocco Mole? I travel far longer to go to work than I do to go shopping, as does pretty much everyone I know.
