Diana Griggs, a local African-American internist, would have been the only black person counted by the 1990 census in this little town 30 miles south of Indianapolis -- if she had felt safe identifying herself as such on the census form.

I can attest too. I live in Indianapolis and have had the misfortune of working with residents of Martinsville and a few other such towns in the Indianapolis Metro area. Their bad reputation is much deserved and I'd say those with good intentions are in the minority.
