This Washington Post article about racial profiling in Montgomery County, MD explains very clearly -- with numbers, no less -- how the Montgomery County police systematically criminalize the Black population.

Of course, it's a two pronged problem. 1. Fire racist cops 2. Work within the black community to stop crime and that will help the perceptions of future #1s...

Work within the black community to stop crime? What, should this be a higher priority than stopping all crime? I think future #1s should take it upon themselves to not be racist, rather than farm out that work to people working in the black community, don't you?

But what about the numbers left out that said that out of 40,000 traffic stops most of the perpetrators were white men in their 18"d to 60's?
I heard this on the news.

and another thing, does it make sense that Blacks should only commit as many crimes or be stopped for the suspicion of the commital of those crimes as there are numbers representing them?
For example, if the article states, "Black drivers accounted for 26 percent[of the stops], the report stated. Blacks make up 15 percent of the county population and 14 of the county's registered drivers."
Does this equal racial profiling? Montgomery county is very close to D.C., I-95, etc. I'm thinking that its not likely that people stay only in their county. And if they don't and are doing something that looks like a crime, and get stopped, and then are Black, I still don't see how its racial profiling.
I don't thyink you can link percentage of the population to the percentage of Black drivers stopped and come up with racial profiling. But, then I have no idea how statistics work, and that ignorance is probably working against me.

ned: wasn't clear enough. I mean that the black community needs to work within itself to stop black crime, as our rates of things like murder and whatnot are way higher than the general populace. This works to the perception among already prejudiced cops that blacks commit crime, validating their world view and keeping the cycle going.
dj: I tend to believe that like everything else, the bad cops get the press while the majority are just doing their jobs. Other than 9.11, the story of "Cop does good job keeping neighborhood safe" really isn't sexy enough for headlines.
